We went on a tour of the new children's department in the Nazarene Church. Our tour director was Emily.
Hutchinson has a new museum that recently opened. It's the salt mine museum. So we decided to go to the salt mines.
So we attended a safety course, put on our safety equipment, and headed down the long elevator ride to the bottom of the mine shaft.
What have we got ourselves into now??
We rode around in these long trams and listen as our tour guide tells us about the history and operation of the salt mines. It is very quite and dark six hundred and fifty feet under the ground
We were allowed to scout around and find some chunks of salt to take home for a souvenir. Barbara found some good looking salt "ore".
All equipment used in the mine is brought down the mine shaft elevator in pieces, then assembled and used in the mining process. Since it is then too large to take back up the elevator, it is left in the mine shaft.
Adam found a good chunk of salt to take home. If he could have lifted the chunk of salt behind him, he would have taken it home too. But we would have had trouble getting it into the car.
The mine has a very controlled temperature and low humidity environment. Because of this, it is an excellent place to store item that you would like to preserve. Barbara and Adam are standing next to a 1979 IBM System 38, that has 64 MB storage capacity and cost $91,780. It is not a row of washing machines.
The ACER Notebook that I am typing on has 142 GB of storage capacity and cost about $120. Big improvement in computers.
This is an original copy of The New York Herald newspaper, published April 16, 1865. The headlines tell of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, and also has an article about John Wilkes Booth.
Hollywood also has many of its valuable films stored here, along with many original costumes and props for many movies. In this picture is an original costume of Superman and Matrix Revolution.
Mark, Andrew and Adam standing 650 feet under Airport Rd. in (or under) Hutchinson.
If you're ever in Hutchinson, the salt mine museum is definitely worth seeing.
Amy and Emily fixed a wonderful meal for us. For desert we had a luscious chocolate cake. I believe this was Emily's birthday cake. Yum Yum
Good picture of us with the grand kids, Andrew, Adam, and Emily. This is in the back yard. It looks like a backdrop of a portrait studio, but its really in the back yard.
We really had a great time in Hutchinson, Kansas visiting the kids and grand kids.
